What is Udyam registration?

Udyam registration is the government's free, paperless self-registration for micro, small and medium enterprises, done on the Udyam portal with the owner's Aadhaar and PAN. It issues a permanent Udyam number and certificate, which is the gateway to MSME benefits — 45-day payment protection, collateral-free CGTMSE-backed loans, priority-sector lending and tender concessions. As of Aug 2026 registration remains free, with no renewal.

Registration is self-declaration: you enter Aadhaar, PAN and basic business details, and the portal pulls investment and turnover figures automatically from your ITR and GST data to classify you as micro, small or medium. One registration covers the whole business — you add multiple locations and activity codes under the same Udyam number. The certificate downloads instantly and never expires, though your classification can move up or down as the portal re-reads your filed data each year.

For a business owner the job is mostly one-time: register early (banks ask for the certificate before extending priority-sector or CGTMSE-backed credit), keep your PAN and GSTIN linked, and check the portal after each ITR season to see whether your category has changed. Suppliers increasingly need the certificate too, because buyers must identify micro and small vendors to apply the section 43B(h) payment discipline correctly.

The common trap is paying an agent or a lookalike website for what is a free government registration — the only portal is udyamregistration.gov.in. Traders can also register, though their benefits are narrower than for manufacturers and service providers, and a business that never revisits its registration risks holding a certificate that no longer matches its real category.
