What is TReDS?

TReDS stands for Trade Receivables Discounting System.

TReDS (Trade Receivables Discounting System) is a set of RBI-regulated online platforms where MSMEs auction their unpaid invoices on large buyers to banks and financiers, converting receivables into cash within days instead of waiting out long credit periods. Financing is typically without recourse to the MSME seller. Large companies above a government-notified turnover threshold are required to onboard as buyers.

The flow: you, the MSME seller, upload an invoice on a platform such as RXIL, M1xchange or Invoicemart; your buyer accepts it digitally; financiers then bid competitively on the discounting rate; the winning bid puts money in your account, and on the due date the buyer pays the financier. Because financing rides on the buyer's credit standing, small suppliers to strong corporates get rates far better than their own borrowing cost.

To start, register as a seller — Udyam registration, KYC and bank details — then check which of your large buyers are already onboarded; the mandate on big companies keeps expanding the pool. It pairs naturally with the 45-day payment rule: buyers under section 43B(h) pressure have a real incentive to settle MSME invoices through TReDS on time.

The catch is buyer acceptance: an invoice only gets financed once the buyer approves it on the platform, so disputed or delayed acceptances stall funding. Clarify upfront who bears the discounting charge, and remember the platform does not fix a bad buyer — a corporate that habitually delays acceptance gives you the same old problem in digital form.
