Every week we meet Jaipur business owners who put off GST registration because the portal looks intimidating, or who registered in a hurry and picked the wrong details. Both cost money later. Here is how registration actually works in 2026 — who needs it, what to keep ready, and what changes the day your GSTIN arrives.
Who must register
The basic thresholds have not moved: ₹40 lakh aggregate turnover for suppliers of goods and ₹20 lakh for services (Rajasthan follows the standard limits, not the special-category ones). Aggregate turnover is PAN-wide — if you run a boutique and a consultancy under the same PAN, both count together.
Some cases need registration regardless of turnover. The big ones: selling through e-commerce operators such as Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho where the operator collects TCS; making inter-state taxable supplies of goods; paying tax under reverse charge; casual taxable persons setting up a temporary stall or exhibition counter; and non-resident taxable persons. If you sell sarees from Johari Bazaar on Meesho, the ₹40 lakh limit does not protect you — you need a GSTIN before the first sale. Our e-commerce and D2C clients almost all fall in this bucket.
Documents, by entity type
| Entity | What you need |
|---|---|
| Proprietorship | PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor, photo, bank proof, place-of-business proof |
| Partnership/LLP | Firm PAN, partnership deed or LLP agreement, partners' PAN + Aadhaar + photos, authorisation letter, bank and premises proof |
| Company | Company PAN, certificate of incorporation, board resolution, directors' PAN + Aadhaar, DSC, bank and premises proof |
Premises proof is where most Jaipur applications stumble. Owned property needs an electricity bill or property-tax receipt; rented premises need the rent agreement plus the owner's bill; and if you work from a family-owned home, a consent letter (NOC) from the owner with their ownership proof. Mismatched names between the rent agreement and the utility bill are the single most common reason for a query from the officer.
The REG-01 flow and Aadhaar authentication
Registration is filed online in Form GST REG-01, in two parts. Part A verifies your PAN, mobile and email and generates a Temporary Reference Number (TRN). Part B is the real application — business details, promoters, place of business, goods and services with HSN/SAC codes, and bank details — with documents uploaded as PDFs or JPEGs.
Aadhaar authentication is the fork in the road. Complete it (an OTP against the promoter's and authorised signatory's Aadhaar), and clean applications are typically approved within about a week without anyone visiting you. Skip it, or if the system flags your application as risky, and you should expect physical verification of the premises before approval — which can stretch the timeline to close to a month. Keep the signage board up and someone available at the address; officers in Jaipur do turn up unannounced.
The Jaipur reality: wards and jurisdiction
In REG-01 you must pick your jurisdiction — and Jaipur applicants routinely get this wrong. Administration is split between the State (Rajasthan commercial taxes department, organised into circles and wards across Jaipur) and the Centre (CGST Jaipur commissionerate, organised into divisions and ranges). Your file lands with one of them, and that officer handles your verification, queries and any future notices. Before filing, use the “Search by GSTIN” and jurisdiction lookup on the GST portal (Services → User Services → Contacts) or check where nearby businesses in your area — Vaishali Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Sitapura, Chandpole — are mapped. Picking a wildly wrong ward does not void the application, but it slows everything down.
After the GSTIN arrives
Approval brings Form REG-06 — your certificate with the 15-digit GSTIN. From that day, three things change. First, invoices: every tax invoice must show your GSTIN, a consecutive serial number, HSN/SAC codes and the correct rate, and the certificate must be displayed at your premises. Second, returns: GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B start from your first tax period even if sales are nil, and remember that GSTR-3B liability is auto-populated and locked — corrections flow through GSTR-1A, as we explained in our note on the GSTR-3B hard lock. Third, you can opt for the composition scheme if you qualify — lower compliance, a small flat rate, but no input credit and no inter-state sales, so it rarely suits e-commerce sellers.
Rate mapping is simpler than it used to be. Since GST 2.0 took effect on 22 September 2025 there are effectively two working slabs — 5% and 18% — plus 0% for essentials and 40% for a short luxury and sin-goods list. Map every product and service to its HSN/SAC and rate on day one; our GST 2.0 explainer covers the slab logic, and the free GST calculator helps you price correctly from the first invoice.
How we can help
